Hello! Welcome to the FREE Monday newsletter where I give you my unsolicited movie recommendations! This week, let’s go on an adventure.
The Adventures of Robin Hood
Man! Movies used to have sets, didn’t they? The Adventures of Robin Hood is so grand in its presentation it’s almost hypnotizing, but that’s not what I love about it so much. It’s got such an innocence to its adventure! Guy sees bad thing happen, guy fights against bad thing, guy gets girl – simple! But not simplistic. The colors, the design, the dialogue, the stunts, are all so poetic and lovely, it’s hard not to be swept away.
The Green Knight
I’ve talked about The Green Knight before, so I won’t go too long here. But one of my favorite things about it remains how it captures the straight up weirdness of Arthurian lore with grandiose effect. It’s one trippy son of a bitch, and I love it for that.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Not only is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fraught with some of the most emotionally riveting, romantic storytelling that has ever graced the screen, it’s also a feat of physical excellence. One thing I think all of these movies have in common is the power and elegance with which their leads are able to move. But even in this crowded field, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon manages to run away with the prize.
The Princess Bride
I mean, duh!
Thanks for reading!
I'm a bit late to the party - been off the grid visiting grandchildren, but I would like to add that I think you hit the bull's eye with this one - a perfect selection - I have nothing to add and wouldn't change a thing. Crouching Tiger is my favorite movie of all time - came out when I was a practicing martial artist and captured the essence of the discipline it takes to master the art and the heartache of the personal sacrifice that comes with dedicating yourself to that discipline. And glad you reminded me about the Green Knight. We did an in-depth study of the poem in my college sophomore English class and I want to see how it translates to the screen. And having raised two daughters, I can't tell you how many times I've watched the Princess Bride - it's been called the perfect movie by a number of reviewers.
Duh, for sure! Love that movie! And, for the first time ever I believe I have already watched these movies. 😁
