Hello! Welcome to the FREE Monday newsletter where I give you my unsolicited movie recommendations! This week, here are two movies about how scary it is to be a woman!
Woman of the Hour
Woman of the Hour! The type of movie that makes me hate Netflix and the whole streaming model with my whole heart. This movie, Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, deserved a theatrical run, and is features a promising directorial eye from Kendrick. Woman of the Hour revolves around an episode of The Dating Game that included the appearance of active serial killer Rodney Alcala, and forgoes all of the (in my opinion) tasteless vulgarity of a lot of other Netflix true crime shows/movies. I guess the good thing about it being on Netflix is you can check it out right now, but damn I wish we could all experience this in theaters.
The Assistant
I recently wrote here about another Kitty Green film, The Royal Hotel, which I enjoyed quite a bit. But even without the eerie wilderness of the Australian Outback as a backdrop, The Assistant is Green’s scariest film. Nothing much really happens in The Assistant, at least nothing that we outright see. We’re left to infer the worst, and infer we do – a shadow on the wall becomes the most malevolent force imaginable, a phone ringing or a disembodied voice filled with malicious intent beyond belief.
Thanks for reading! NOTE: This Friday’s newsletter would normally be my free review round-up, but because October is a short week, I’m going to switch things up a bit. You can expect the Review Round-Up on November 1 instead.
I enjoyed this movie, intense, chilling, and one that I probably wouldn't have visited the theatre to see. Thanks Sammie.
Thanks Sammie, I'll watch Woman of the Hour via the dreaded Netflix.
