Hello! Welcome to the FREE Monday newsletter where I give you my unsolicited movie recommendations! It’s a short one this week – I have no hot takes, and Mark Ruffalo is INVESTIGATING. Enjoy!
Zodiac
There are so many great performances in Zodiac, a movie that elicits many a “oh look, that guy!” But Mark Ruffalo is on another level. No one working in Hollywood today is better at playing a cop than this guy. Zodiac, In the Cut, Collateral – hell, even Now You See Me! He brings a natural edge to that particular role that so many actors can’t access, but each outing is so detailed and nuanced.
I haven’t watched Spotlight yet this week, but as soon as I finished watching Zodiac last night I had the urge to immediately turn it on – not just because of Mark Ruffalo, but a lot because of Mark Ruffalo. Every time I watch this movie, I flip on who I think should have taken home an acting Oscar. Last time, it was Rachel McAdams. Maybe it’ll be Ruff’s turn this time around!

Glad to see you're giving Mark Ruffalo his due. You might laugh at this, but I think one of his best portrayals was Bruce Banner (The Hulk) in the first Avengers movie. During the epic battle scene, when Captain America says to him: "Dr. Banner, isn't it time for you to get angry?" He looks back over his shoulder with a smile that expresses both sadness and acceptance, and replies: "That's my secret - I'm always angry." It's a powerful moment that underscores the tragic nature and burden of being a superhero, and he pulls it off.
I understand that there is an upcoming new Oscar category for Best Ensemble. Would be a perfect retroactive award for Spotlight.
